General Pulaski

Celebrating the Legacy of
General Casimir Pulaski - A Revolutionary War Hero

Casimir Pulaski, 1749-1779"I came here, where freedom is being defended, to serve it, and to live or die for it," wrote Casimir Pulaski to George Washington in a letter in which he offered his military services to America during the Revolutionary War. He proved true to his word. At age 32, his heroic death at the Battle of Savannah on October 11, 1779 was received with sorrow across the land. General Pulaski's life represents the dedication of countless Americans of Polish and other ethnic origin to the principles of personal liberty and independence, which have always defined the spirit of the United States of America.

Born into a wealthy family in Poland in 1747, Pulaski, as a young
man, fought for freedom from Russia in his homeland until
1771, when he was exiled to France. In Paris he met American
envoy Benjamin Franklin, who influenced him to help Americans
fight for their independence. Washington was so impressed
with Pulaski's abilities during the Battle of Brandywine Creek
that he recommended the Continental Congress appoint Pulaski
as General of the American Cavalry
. In 1778, Pulaski organized
an independent corps of cavalry and light infantry known as
the Pulaski Legion. It is reported that he spent $50,000 of his own money to help train and equip his troops.

Pulaski's legacy has been celebrated in an annual Pulaski Day Parade and wreath-laying ceremony in many cities around the country. The October parade is usually organized by non profits associatins to preserve the memory and the legacy of one of America's greatest Revolutionary heroes.

General Casimir Pulaski General Casimir Pulaski (1747-1779)

After surviving numerous bloody campaigns against Russia, Count Casimir Pulaski retired to France in 1777, bitterly disappointed and deeply depressed at Poland's failure to defeat her foes.
In Paris Pulaski met Benjamin Franklin, who was recruiting volunteers to fight in America's War of Independence. Mindful that England had recommended that Poland be partitioned by her hostile neighbors in 1772, Pulaski enthusiastically responded to Franklin's plea for assistance. In his letter of introduction to Washington, Franklin wrote of Pulaski as "an officer famous throughout Europe for his bravery and conduct in defense of the liberties of his country against ... great invading powers".

While awaiting his formal appointment by Congress, Pulaski was invited by Washington to serve on his staff during the Battle of Brandywine in September, 1777. Pulaski's performance during this baptism of blood in America earned him a commission as Brigadier General of the entire American cavalry.

In 1779, Pulaski was ordered to join General Lincoln in the South to help recapture Savannah. After French General D'Estaing, leader in the attack on the southern capital, fell wounded, Pulaski is reported to have rushed forward to assume command and raise the soldiers' spirits by his example and courage, only to be mortally wounded himself. Pulaski was named the "Father of the American Cavalry", and remains one of the well known figures of the American Revolutionary War. There is hardly a state in America without a county or town, street or square, monument or tablet, school or highway named in grateful memory of General Casimir Pulaski.
